Here is an example of a small group attempting to fight a giant interest group— the oil industry. “Friends of Rim Rock,” have set out to stop proposed gas drilling at Rim Rock so future generations can enjoy its beauty and marvel.

Rim Rock, considered the “Crown Jewel” of the Allegheny National Forest, is frequented by hundred of visitors daily. It’s beauty and serenity is at risk due to a proposed drilling. Given the global oil crisis and current environmental issues, it is our responsibility to pursue other energy avenues rather than destroy what left of our planet. We cannot continue to consume more resources, rather we need to pursue alternate options.

Please visit saverimrock.com and sign a petition to stop this proposed action.

Rimrock, the crown jewel of the Allegheny National Forest in PA, the ONLY national forest in PA, is a landmark case-in-point for the entire nation! The FOR coalition was formed in response to the announcement in March 2008 that at least one oil company had notified the Forest Service of its intent to drill oil and gas wells in the vicinity of the Rimrock Overlook. According to the Forest Service, the preliminary proposal is in close proximity to the overlook area and the Rimrock access road.

By law, any proposal to drill for oil and gas in a national forest must be analyzed in an Environmental Assessment pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

Federal actions such as permitting access and surface occupancy for the exercise of private mineral rights must be analyzed to determine potential environmental consequences. This is the law, and it is not being applied in our Allegheny National Forest. It is being applied in other national forests, such as the Ottawa and Huron-Manistee National Forests in Michigan. It is being applied in the Monongahela Forest in West Virginia, as well as the Ouachita in Arkansas. But in the Allegheny National Forest, over 10,000 oil and gas wells have been drilled and thousands of miles of roads have been constructed without environmental analysis and public comment, pursuant to NEPA
